Voice Of The People

Delhi alone has more than 10 lakh homeless people

Akriti Bhatia, Founding Partner, Jan Ki Baat talks to the members of Beghar Cycle yatra organised by Shehari Adhikar Manch’ on the occassion of 1st October ‘World Homeless Day’.

1st October of every year is dedicated to the homeless people by celebrating ‘World homeless Day’ celebrated on 2010.

The basic philosophy of this was to help the homeless get access to shelter.

The key take aways from the live reportage:

“We have to deal with insects, water and sanitation crisis. Thieves take all that we have. At least give us a single room.”- Homeless.(sic)

“Even if we complain, Police tells us to hold the thief and then they will come.”

“Water is a major concern. Give us properly constructed houses. We do not even have a Ration Card.”

“We used to send our children to schools, but we have to pay water, and electricity bills. It becomes very difficult to manage.”

“Rainn Basera is only for the males. They do not allow families in the Rain Basera.”

The major changes that were expected from the ‘Beghar Cycle Yatra’-

  • The objective was to make sensitize the people towards problem faced by the homeless.
  • Rights of homeless was also discussed.
  • “These people subsidise our costs.”- Amrita, Panellist.
  • The homeless people are the most marginalised”- Shivani, Panellist
  • There is a call to end homelessness by 2030 in alignment with the United Nation’s sustainable development goals.
  • Only about 10,000 homeless get shelter while the rest sleep on roads.
  • “It is impossible to build 2 crore houses till 2022. So, the ‘housing for all policy’ could go in vain.”- Arvind, Panellist.

“According to the 2011 Census, there were 1.77 million homeless people in Delhi, or 0.15% of the country’s total population ” – Arvind Unii, Urban development analyst
