Jan Ki Baat covers the Pulwara village in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh. The village’s population has been existing sans electricity for decades now. The whole down hangs in darkness. Natural water sources, too, are rare in the village. Water and electricity are the two primary requirements necessary for survival. And yet, they are absent in Pulwara.

Pulwara is a medium size village located in Talbehat of Lalitpur district, Uttar Pradesh with total 347 families residing. The Pulwara village has population of 1830 of which 957 are males while 873 are females as per Population Census 2011. In Pulwara village population of children with age 0-6 is 338 which makes up 18.47 % of total population of village. Average Sex Ratio of Pulwara village is 912 which is equal than Uttar Pradesh state average of 912. Child Sex Ratio for the Pulwara as per census is 1048, higher than Uttar Pradesh average of 902. Pulwara village has lower literacy rate compared to Uttar Pradesh. In 2011, literacy rate of Pulwara village was 66.69 % compared to 67.68 % of Uttar Pradesh. In Pulwara Male literacy stands at 81.06 % while female literacy rate was 50.43 %.

Electricity and water have been a source of discontent in many parts of rural India, even since independence. 70 years later, Pulwara still doesn’t have access to these basic and necessary amenities. Why has the UP government not addressed this issue?
