Residents of Gomti Nagar, Lucknow about elections and today’s politics

The team of Jan Ki Baat spoke to a few residents of Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, regarding the upcoming State elections. An owner of a stall in the city believed that Akhilesh Yadav did not need to join forces with another party, much less Congress, to win this election. Congress’ image is quite marred in UP, therefore the alliance is a risky one. AKhilesh Yadav’s SP could have won by itself, he emphasizes. Another citizen, too, came out in support of Akhilesh Yadav, saying that he had done a lot for the people of Lucknow. “I usually vote for the BJP but I want the SP to come back to power because of all the good it has done in the city”, the man reiterated. State and Centre are two different levels altogether and Akhilesh Yadav seems to be a good man for the State of Uttar Pradesh. Everyone would’ve similar views if the benefits of SP’s initiatives could reach them, he said quite confidently; Akhilesh Yadav’s party would have no problem if only its welfare schemes reached all of UP.

Uttar Pradesh’s 400+ seats are currently divided into 229 held by Samajwadi Party, 79 by SP’s Opposition, the Bahujan Samajwadi Party and the BJP and Congress controlling 41 and 29 seats, respectively. There’s an indication that the 2017 UP Elections may witness SP and BJP contesting against each other. The dates for the UP Elections were announced recently; it would begin on February 11 and continue till March 8, with 5 other Phases in between.

UP has been a site of battle for decades now due to its size, demography and geographic location. One would soon able to witness this battle.
