Here’s whom the Kanpur and Lucknow Janta voted for

The third phase of UP Elections saw urban regions like Kanpur and the state capital Lucknow voting for their next leader. Jan Ki Baat spoke to a few citizens of both states to understand which political party and candidates they were inclining towards. The Head of Department at Kanpur University, Dr Sandeep Kumar Singh, believed that one can only hope for better governance from the presented platter of candidates; like an MCQ test, one had to choose the best from the options available to one. Students of the University expressed similar sentiments when they said that the most common motive behind voting for a certain candidate was whether he/she could encourage the development of youth by supplying them with employment and cultivating job-creator spirit amongst the youth. A member of the Youth wing of Samajwadi Party in Lucknow, Kunwar Ritesh Singh claims that Akhilesh Yadav was the emblem of and for UP’s young population. Yadav, Singh said, fulfils his promises; the dream of possessing laptop was one of these fulfilled promises. Despite infighting, Akhilesh Yadav has performed his duties well, and unlike Narendra Modi’s BJP, has followed a principled approach, said Singh. Citizenry at Lucknow had a mizex response: some said BJP should be given a chance to prove itself as it would be a fresh change from the SP-BSP-Congress scene. Others had hopes of either BSP’s return or were indifferent to the next rulers, with their only wish being good governance.

UP’s citizens voted for 69 of its 403 constituencies in its 3rd phase. In Lucknow Cantt, Yadav family’s Aparna Yadav was fielded against BJP’s Rita Bahuguna Joshi. The state elections in Uttar Pradesh have made many anxious: one of the most awaited State assembly elections of 2017, its result would bear a testimony to the public mood regarding the PM, post-demonetization. This is also a mid-term election for the BJP, who won in 2014; a kind of litmus test of trust.

With 4 phases more to go, everyone will soon know the truth value of Akhilesh Yadav’s “Kaam Bolta Hai” slogan. Will SP retain the seats it won in 2012’s Elections? Or would the Central government form UP’s State government, too?
